Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Lil Hardin (1902-1971) attended Fisk University before moving to Chicago to become a jazz pianist in 1917. While working with King Oliver, she met and married Louis Armstrong, becoming his second wife. With her New Orleans Wanderers recordings in 1926, she was among the first women to lead a jazz recording session.
