Cornetist Charlie Love (1885-1963) was born in Plaquemines parish and from 1903 toured with various bands around the state, such as Alexander’s Ragtime Band from Alexandria and the Caddo Jazz Band in Shreveport. He came to New Orleans in 1922, where he worked dance halls with Big Eye Louis Nelson and Walter Decou and joined John Robichaux’s pit band at the Lyric Theater in 1925. He worked in dance halls throughout the Depression and in the 1940s and 50s was a regular at the Happy Landing. In 1949 he recorded for Bill Russell’s American Music label and later with the Love-Jiles Ragtime Band for Riverside in 1960.
