Al Morgan Interview (8/19/1958): Born in New Orleans, bassist and tuba player Albert Morgan (1908-1974) was the youngest of the Morgan brothers (Sam, Isaiah, and Andrew). He studied bass with Simon Marrero and became a member of Isaiah Morgan’s Young Morgan Band in the early 1920s. In 1923 he joined Lee Collins on a Gulf Coast tour, and then he joined Fate Marable on the riverboats 1925-29. He recorded in New York with Fats Waller and his Buddies in September 1929 and then returned to New Orleans to record with the Jones-Collins Astoria Hot Eight in November 1929. From June 1932 Morgan performed and recorded extensively with Cab Calloway’s big band, until Milt Hinton replaced him. During the latter 1930s he worked in Los Angeles with Eddie Barefield and Les Hite, performed in the mid-1940s with Louis Jordan, and then returned to Los Angeles, where he continued to play into the 1960s.
