Andrew Bailey

1899 – 1977

Andrew Bailey (1899-1977) was not a musician but grew up in the Seventh Ward of New Orleans and attended dances, fish fries, and “second lines” where early jazz music was performed. His favorite dances were the two-step and the slow drag. Bailey’s recollections of pioneer jazz musicians such as Manuel Perez, Joe Oliver, Freddie Keppard, Buddie Petit, and Wooden Joe Nicholas and his descriptions of the social activity that surrounded them brings early jazz history to life.
