New Jazz Studies

This chapter begins the section on jazz historiography, including defining the parameters of what has been called the "New Jazz Studies." The class concentrates on issues and perspectives relating to gender and critiques of canon formation, stylistic boundaries, authenticity validation, presentism, and essentialism.
